Libido is the psychological and physiological drive toward sexual activity. It is not a fixed setting you are born with and stuck keeping forever. Research consistently frames it as a dynamic system shaped by hormones (testosterone, estrogen, dopamine), stress load, sleep quality, relationship context, medications, and mental health. A paper published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine puts it simply: desire is responsive to context far more than most people expect.
One distinction worth knowing: sex researchers, particularly Emily Nagoski in her work on the dual control model, separate spontaneous desire (wanting sex out of nowhere) from responsive desire (wanting sex once stimulation has already started). Neither is more normal than the other. Responsive desire is actually the more common pattern, especially for women and in long-term relationships, yet it tends to get mislabeled as “low libido” because it does not look like what gets shown in movies.
What shapes libido day to day
Libido sits at the intersection of biology, psychology, and circumstance. The most common contributors to a noticeable dip include:
- Hormonal shifts. Testosterone (in all genders) and estrogen both influence desire. Perimenopause, postpartum periods, and certain phases of the menstrual cycle each produce measurable changes.
- Medications. SSRIs and certain hormonal contraceptives are among the most documented contributors to reduced sexual desire. This is a medical conversation worth having with a prescriber, not something to quietly tolerate.
- Stress and sleep deficit. Both elevate cortisol, which competes with the hormonal environment that supports desire. This is not a metaphor; it is physiology.
- Relationship dynamics. Emotional safety, novelty, unresolved conflict, and felt closeness each influence whether desire activates in a partnered context.
- Body image and self-relationship. Feeling disconnected from or hostile toward your own body tends to suppress responsive desire specifically.
None of these are character flaws. They are inputs into a system.
