Porous describes a material whose surface contains microscopic channels, pores, or open spaces that allow fluids to penetrate below the outer layer. In the context of sex toys, it is a material-safety classification that determines whether a product can be genuinely cleaned and whether it is appropriate for sustained intimate contact.
The microscopic structure is the key. Non-porous materials (medical-grade silicone, borosilicate glass, surgical stainless steel, ABS plastic) have sealed, closed-cell surfaces. Bacteria, fungi, and viruses that reach a non-porous toy sit on top, where soap and water or a dedicated cleaner can actually reach them. Porous materials work the opposite way: fluids, bodily secretions, and microorganisms get drawn into those internal channels and form biofilms that standard surface cleaning cannot dislodge, regardless of how long or how thoroughly you scrub.
The most commonly encountered porous materials in intimate products are jelly rubber, PVC, TPE (thermoplastic elastomer), and TPR (thermoplastic rubber). They are soft, inexpensive, and flexible, which is why they appear frequently in entry-level toys, often listed with vague labels such as “soft skin,” “UR3,” “Cyberskin,” “Futurotic,” or simply “novelty material.” Those descriptors are marketing language, not material specifications.
Why the porosity of a toy matters for health
The hygiene problem is structural, not behavioral. Peer-reviewed microbiology shows that porous materials support microbial retention and biofilm formation in their internal channels, conditions that surface-level washing cannot address. Shared or inadequately cleaned toys are linked to transmission of HPV, bacterial vaginosis, yeast, and UTIs, with material type modifying the degree of risk. HPV DNA has been shown to persist on toy surfaces after cleaning, with porous surfaces retaining more than non-porous ones.
The second concern is chemical. Many porous toy materials, particularly PVC and jelly rubber, are plasticized with compounds such as DEHP, DINP, and DBP (all phthalate-class plasticizers) that are not chemically bound into the material. They can leach out on contact with heat, oil-based lubricants, or prolonged use. Testing has detected measurable phthalates in commercially available intimate products. Several of these compounds are restricted in the EU under REACH and banned from children’s products in the US, but adult intimate products sold as “novelty” items largely sidestep equivalent mandatory testing. The real-world health magnitude of leaching in intimate use is not yet fully quantified, but the biological plausibility and the precautionary principle both point in the same direction: nonporous materials remove the exposure entirely.
How to tell whether a toy is porous
No single test is conclusive in isolation, but the following signals are reliable enough to be worth checking before you buy:
- Material name. If the listing says silicone, verify it specifies “100% medical-grade silicone” or “platinum-cured silicone.” The words “silicone blend,” “soft silicone feel,” or “silicone-like” indicate a mixed or porous compound. Glass, stainless steel, and ABS plastic listed plainly are nonporous.
- Price point. Genuine medical-grade silicone toys are never extremely cheap. A $5 “silicone” dildo is almost certainly TPE or a blend.
- Smell. A new toy with a strong chemical or rubber odor is off-gassing, which is a direct sign of plasticizer content in a porous material. Nonporous silicone, glass, and steel are essentially odorless.
- Surface feel over time. Porous materials tend to become tacky or sticky as the plasticizers migrate to the surface. If an older toy has developed a sticky film, it is degrading.
- Firmness. Jelly and TPE/TPR are very soft and squishy; nonporous silicone has more memory and springs back without the same gel-like compression. This is not definitive alone but useful alongside other signals.
What to do if you already own a porous toy
If you are not ready to replace it immediately, two harm-reduction steps lower the risk meaningfully:
- Use a condom over the toy for every use. An intact latex or polyurethane condom creates a nonporous barrier between the toy material and mucous membranes. Change the condom between partners and between orifices.
- Treat it as a single-user item. Porous toys should not be shared, even with a long-term partner, because cleaning cannot guarantee pathogen removal.
Surface-clean porous toys with warm water and mild soap before and after each use. Do not boil them, put them in the dishwasher, or use harsh chemical disinfectants: high heat accelerates material degradation and can increase leaching, and bleach can damage TPE/TPR without neutralizing what is trapped inside the material.
